With so many styles of Yoga available, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Are you looking for a slow and meditative practice to relax and restore, or do you prefer a dynamic session that gets your heart pumping?

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced yogi, understanding the different styles can help you find the perfect fit.

In this blog, we’ll explore five popular types of Yoga—Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Yin, and Bikram—to guide you on your journey.

Hatha Yoga: Where it All Started

Hatha Yoga is often considered the foundation of modern yoga practice. It is a gentle, yet challenging, slow-paced style that focuses on aligning the body through postures (asanas) and breath control (pranayama).

Hatha is an excellent choice for beginners, as it provides a solid introduction to yoga, helping improve focus, strength, balance, and flexibility.

For more experienced yogis, Hatha offers the opportunity to explore holding more challenging variations of the postures while concentrating on their breath.

If you’re looking for a balanced, meditative practice, Hatha Yoga is a great place to start.

Vinyasa Yoga: Let if Flow!

Vinyasa Yoga is syncronising movement and breath, flowing from one posture to another, in a slow or fast pace. This is a dynamic Yoga style helping practitioners build strength, flexibility, focus and endurance. Vinyasa classes tend to be varied, including different and creative sequences.

If you enjoy movement and a cardiovascular challenge, Vinyasa Yoga is for you.

Ashtanga Yoga: Discipline and Structure

Ashtanga Yoga follows a set sequence of postures, practised in a specific order. Traditionally, Asthanga is practised without music. It can be a physically demanding practice, requiring lots of stamina. Classes follow the same structured sequence, making this style ideal for those who seek routine and discipline.

If you’re looking for a challenging, structured practice that builds endurance and self-discipline, Ashtanga Yoga is a great fit.

Yin Yoga: Slow and Deep

Yin Yoga is a slow, meditative practice that involves holding poses for an extended period (typically 3–5 minutes), while focusing on the breath. This style targets the deep connective tissues, promoting flexibility and joint mobility.

If you seek a calming, introspective practice that enhances mindfulness and deep relaxation, Yin Yoga is perfect for you.

Bikram Yoga: Hot, Hot, Hot!

Bikram Yoga, often referred to as Hot Yoga, consists of a fixed sequence of 26 postures practised in a room heated to around 40°C (104°F) with high humidity. The heat is believed to help detoxify the body, increase flexibility, and build stamina. This style is physically demanding and best suited for those who enjoy intense, sweat-inducing workouts.

If you thrive in challenging conditions and enjoy exercising in a heated room, Bikram Yoga might be your ideal practice.

Finding Your Yoga Style

Each Yoga style offers something unique, catering to different needs, goals, and preferences. If you’re unsure where to start, consider your personal intentions:

  • For beginners and a balanced practice: Hatha Yoga
  • For creativity and movement: Vinyasa Yoga
  • For discipline and structure: Ashtanga Yoga
  • For deep relaxation and flexibility: Yin Yoga
  • For an intense, heated challenge: Bikram Yoga
