Yoga – It’s All About the B... Breath!

Someone once said, “If you can breathe, you can do Yoga.”

It’s such a simple yet powerful statement—because breath is at the heart of Yoga. While poses and stretches are often what we see on the surface, it’s the breath that truly connects us to the deeper layers of the practice.

In Yoga, breath awareness—often called pranayama—isn’t just an add-on. It’s a key element. Whether you’re flowing through a sequence or holding a posture, tuning into your breath helps anchor you in the present moment. It transforms movement into meditation, and your practice into something fluid, conscious, and beautiful.

Even though breathing is something we do without thinking, when we do bring awareness to it, something shifts. We begin to notice where we hold tension. We feel where emotions sit in the body. And we create the space to soften, release, and reconnect.

Taking time to simply sit and notice your breath—even for a few moments—can be incredibly grounding. It’s a reminder that you are here, alive, and connected.

So, the next time you roll out your mat—or settle into your chair—let your breath guide you and support you. Let it be your anchor when the mind wanders, your comfort when the body feels tense, and your reminder that everything begins with one simple inhale… and one gentle exhale.

Gentle Breathing Practice:

Take a moment to sit tall, whether on your mat or in a chair. If sat in a chair, get your feet on the ground.
Close your eyes if it feels comfortable, or simply soften your gaze.

Become aware of your own breath. Listen to it and feel the air entering and exiting your body.
Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of four… (or less, if it feels uncomfortable)
Pause for a moment…
Exhale gently through your mouth for a count of four. Take another pause.
Repeat for a few rounds, letting each breath soften your body and calm your mind.

Affirmation:

"With each breath, I return to calm. I am grounded, I am supported, I am at peace."

From my heart to yours, Namaste!

About Me

Hello, I'm Eve Oliveira, a passionate Yoga teacher and complementary therapist with over two decades of experience.

While I am trained in various Yoga styles, my heart truly belongs to Hatha Yoga. I love guiding my students through stretches and postures, helping them connect with their breath and become more mindful of their bodies.

My main focus is to encourage students to explore different expressions of Yoga poses, always respecting their unique abilities.

My goal is to provide a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable atmosphere where students feel empowered to take charge of their practice with my gentle guidance.

When I'm not on the mat, I work as a complementary therapist, offering massages, reflexology, reiki, and facials. I also share my expertise as a tutor of complementary therapies at a college in Devon.
