Prop or No Prop?
Eve Oliveira | FEB 23, 2025

When I first started practising yoga, I used to feel offended whenever my teacher suggested using a prop for certain poses. To me, it felt like an indication that I wasn’t "good enough" and needed extra help from my prop friends.
It wasn’t until I began my teacher training that I truly understood the power of props—not just as a means of support, but also as tools to help deepen and refine my practice.
Take Bridge Pose, for example. Placing a block between the knees not only helps activate the inner thighs but also prevents the knees from splaying out, ensuring proper alignment and engagement.
Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate that some postures are nearly impossible to achieve without props, no matter how flexible or experienced a practitioner is. Head-to-Toe Pose is a great example. This pose requires extending one leg forward or bring it to the side (hip abduction) while holding onto the big toe. Unless you have exceptionally long arms (or short legs!), this can be quite a challenge.
A simple adjustment—placing a scarf or strap under the ball of the extended foot—can be a game changer. It effectively "lengthens" the arm, allowing for better posture and preventing the upper body from collapsing forward.
Props are not a sign of weakness; they are an extension of our practice. Whether for alignment, support, or deepening a pose, they offer endless possibilities for exploration and growth.
So, the real question isn’t prop or no prop?—but rather, how can a prop best serve your practice today?
